So, if macadamias are Australian, why do some people associate them with Hawaii?
It's a fair question.
In the late 1800s, macadamia seeds from Australia were introduced to Hawaii. The islands later became an important centre for commercial growing and helped bring macadamias to a much wider audience.
But the tree's roots, quite literally, are Australian.
Commercial macadamia growing also developed here, with early orchards established in northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland during the late 1800s. Today, macadamias are grown in several countries, but Australia remains their natural home.
Where Do Australian Macadamias Grow Today?
Macadamias still grow commercially in the regions where their story began, as well as in other suitable growing areas.
Queensland is home to important growing regions, including Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. Further south, northern New South Wales has a long history of macadamia growing, particularly around the Northern Rivers.
These regions have their own growing conditions, local knowledge and farming stories. Behind every harvest are growers who spend years caring for their orchards before the nuts are ready to pick.

How Are Australian Macadamias Harvested and Processed?
Macadamias don't arrive in your pantry overnight.
The trees need time to grow before they produce a harvest. Once the nuts are ready, growers collect them, remove the outer husks and prepare them for processing.
